Sadie B. – Going Out of Business Sale

‘Tis a sad day… Sadie B. on 12th Avenue South just across the parking lot from Trim/Mirror is closing its doors so their fabulous housewares are now on massive sale.

They are the only place in Nashville I know that carries Nigella Lawson’s “Living Kitchen” product and I’m heading there tomorrow to see what I can salvage for myself. Sadie B. is (while I can still use the present tense) one of the coolest places in town for gifts and I still regret not registering for my wedding there. Flatware, china, home accessories – it’s all there so please go have a look before you no longer have a chance to.

Nashville Fashion Group

Filed under: Fashion Forward — Ms. Tabitha @ 10:24 am

Constant growth brings constant progression. In a city such as Nashville, we definitely see an influx of people from all over the country and, like yours truly, the world making their way here. Songwriters and musicians aside, it pleases me to see other realms of art taking steps forward and into the public eye more and more each day. The hunger for wanting this city to become more cosmopolitan is something I know I share with lots of people, and today I found (albeit a little late on the bandwagon) Robert Campbell’s Nashville Fashion Group.

Mr. Campbell/NFG looks to take my wishes, and actually takes steps to make them happen which is a lot more proactive than the rest of us (read: ME) who just complain about a supposed lack of couture in this city. With plans for Nashville Fashion Week in 2009, fashion shows, and lots of support for local designers and artists and fashion-forward individuals – they want to take what style in this city to new heights. I don’t know about you but I’m certainly all for it!

Life* á la mode will be keeping a close watch on NFG’s activities and will keep you all updated. I can’t begin to describe how excited I am!

Best (kind of) oxymoron name of store ever

Filed under: Home — Ms. Tabitha @ 12:23 am

Nouveau Classics on Belmont Blvd. (right before/after you cross 440) has some of the funnest furniture ever. After a long day at the Yoga Fair today (Happy Yoga Day USA btw) I almost missed their giant “S.A.L.E.” sign in the window. The hubby and I headed there to see what we could find. They were having a Floor Sample Sale with pretty big mark-downs on sofa’s, chairs, coffee tables, desks, armoires – all good stuff at pretty decent sale prices.

There was a baby blue, plush sectional set that was $976 (marked down from almost $2500) and it had “Hold for Mary” written on the tag. So in my head, that meant “Not YET sold.” Then I looked at the guy in the jeans and plaid shirt and faux hawk taking measurements, and the bargain-huntress and baby blue couch fiend in me wanted to be all, “Huh.. are YOU Mary?” but I held my tongue. Turns out he was the friend of Mary’s husband’s who has the truck to haul the couch home for them in. Just my luck right – the one sectional couch the hubby and I both liked and it was wrapped up and taken from right under our noses. Typical.

Those of us who missed out on the really good deals will have to wait a while till they do another big sale like this. It should be consolation enough to know that there WILL be one in the future but as of tomorrow, they’ll roll their new line of furniture out and send the sale pieces to their sister store, Urban Living, in Knoxville.

The good news is, everything in their store is somewhat customizable. For example, the hubby had his eye on a black leather (or it could have been vinyl) lounger, and it can also come in white. Most of their goods are made-to-order pieces so if you’re picky like we are when it comes to furnishings, if you unlike we are have a crap ton of disposable income to spend on quality furniture, this is a good place to go to.

Primpy prettiness

Filed under: Cool Springs,Green Hills — Ms. Tabitha @ 1:39 pm

All y’all who breathed a sigh of relief when Sephora opened its doors here lemme hear ya say AMEN!!!!

That seems to give us a bit of bragging rights about the mall doesn’t it? “We have a Sephora!” All those wonderful, luxurious products from the likes of Sugar, Philosophy, Urban Decay. FINALLY.

Little known fact: Before Sephora hit our town, there were plenty of places to find great brands of makeup. The store I still go to for makeup needs or cosmetics and sometimes a little juice, is the Cosmetic Market (with locations in Green Hills and Cool Springs). Owned by the same people who started Private Edition, this is a little less intimidating of a shop to go into. The staff, in their green aprons, are fairly knowledgeable of the products they sell which is more than I can say for the salespeople at Sephora.

They now also have online shopping on their site (requires Flash) which makes it so much more convenient because, well, if you can avoid actually going to Green Hills or even worse, Cool Springs, DO IT. And guys, Valentine’s Day is coming up! The Cosmetics Market has gift certificates, most girls love getting pamper products (no facial, “zap your lines” type goods please) like luscious body lotions or bath soaps as gifts. Hand it to her when you take her out to a nice dinner. You may not get laid, but you’ll more than likely make her smile.

Sale sale sale!!!

And guys, you’re not missing out either if you head over to The Cotton Mill in Graces Plaza in Green Hills. Their range of brands seems to have expanded over the past couple of years, and they’re trying their best to cater to not just the Belle Meade moms but now to their kids and to young, working adults looking to ween their way into designer gear.

What better way to start than this sale right? Brands like Rock & Republic, Nanette Lapore, Theory for the girls, and Ted Baker, Chip & Pepper and Seven for men, just to name a few. Why Ted Baker’s not on sale for girls is beyond me… go to the website and check out the brand’s clothes – very fun! Trust the Brits to make fashion quirkier and way cooler.

And who knows? Maybe their formal wear is marked down too. What with big gala events coming up soon, might as well go check out the sale.

A clean house shouldn’t smell like bleach. Martha Stewart, to paraphrase, believes that a clean house smells like freshly cooked food and fresh, washed sheets. To me, it should smell pleasant, whether it’s using potpourri, candles, fragrance plug-ins or otherwise. My personal choice is candles.

The day I discovered Voluspa‘s candles was the day I learned that you don’t need an arsenal of candles to have a room (or several) smell good. These candles burn clean, they make the ENTIRE house smell awesome (my living room has 25 foot ceilings) right up to the second storey. My favorites are the three-wick candles from their Japonica line – the flat, round tin at the bottom of the picture – that last about 80 hours. They come in a range of scents that should suit any preference.

Previously, I ordered them from, or picked them up when I had the chance at Anthropologie. Today, while walking around Hillsboro Village after lunch with a friend, I walked into Fire Finch (which btw is having a HUGE sale – 30% off Jonathan Adler merch) at the corner where the service station is and noticed amongst their array of home fragrances, the same candles I’ve been paying shipping for like a sucker. Another retailer that carries the Voluspa range is Obelisk in Green Hills. These candles are great, well worth the cost (About $18 – $19).

Besides, who needs to have eleventy votive holders or ugly jars sitting around the house when you can cut clutter and get just one, maybe two candles burning at a time?

And so it begins….

Hello!

Those of you who know me know I love to shop. I’ve been living in Nashville for almost five years, going on my sixth and not to say that it’s taken me this long to find good shopping, it’s more so that it’s taken me this long to start a blog about shopping. You’d think this would have been a sure-thing from the beginning but no, I was feeling more self-indulgent than wanting to be useful to the community in any way.

But now, I’m getting off my arse, and making the most of my time and personal knowledge. I would like for Life* á la mode to help people new to the city, or even people native to the city, to realize that there’s a huge array of choices for shopping here in town, and that one isn’t limited to just particular boutiques for particular items. Sure, we don’t have a major or even decent department store anywhere, but pish posh, that’s only if you don’t want to use your imagination. There are plenty of independent shops here that fit every budget, style and trend and I want to help you find them all. Nashville may not be a city known for being in vogue but like hell if I’m going to let people living here think that there aren’t choices because there are!

So here it is! Life* á la mode is, in a nutshell, about shopping in Nashville, TN and the surrounding areas like Franklin, Brentwood, Cool Springs, East Nashville. To start, anyway. At some point I’d love to see this grow beyond just Tennessee and move into cities one can take trips to like Atlanta or the Carolinas and beyond. For now, for the latter, it’ll be websites and quick mentions here and there but you can count on Life* á la mode to be your guide to anything from home decor products to shoes and accessories to underwear.

I’m also open to suggestions so if any of you know of stores I may not have mentioned yet, or are worthy of mentioning, please send them my way! Give me a reason to go shopping even more than I already do!
