The Revolution of Craft

UPDATE: I had originally said the event’s on Friday, it’s Saturday. In case you guys haven’t had a chance to look at the website or the poster.

Nashville, get ready to get crafty! The Nashville Craft Mafia is having their first (of many, hopefully) event at the Cannery Ballroom this Saturday at noon. Revolution of Craft is a showcase of what the NCM is dubbing “urban craft,” which I can only imagine and hope to be a smorgasboard of beautiful hand-made jewelry, art and crafts from 55 designers. Or to quote the mafia – “a Mecca of creativity at The Cannery Ballroom for your enjoyment and shopping delight.”

The event is free, it sounds absolutely fabulous and I cannot wait!

Gong xi gong xi!

Happy Year of the Pig everyone! Today marks the 8th day of the Lunar New Year, may this be a good year for all!

Before getting married, I looked forward to receiving red packets of money from my elders. It’s a tradition to bestow upon people younger than you with a small token of prosperity. Red packets can be very pretty but these have to be the prettiest I’ve ever seen:

And with a cute little pig on the front too! These Li Xi gift envelopes are available from Design Night, a lovely website by designer couple Tram Pham and Dominic Andrea.

These pretty envelopes definitely make it much more enjoyable to dole out cash to the young’uns!!

An unorthodox post here at Life á la mode, a change of pace for the weekend if you will. I have to have to tell you all about the international market off Charlotte Avenue, K&S Market. Not to inundate you with the fascinating Asian fare that awaits you, I recommend this place if you like your produce and seafood fresh, varied and affordable, if you’re ready to broaden your grocery shopping horizons, and if you’re ready to add some flavor and spice to your diet.

They also have staples, and a whole room devoted to household needs (sponges, cleaning supplies, tupperware, chopsticks, sake sets, hotpots.. y’know – the usual) and most things you would expect to find in a supermarket without the fluff like a magazine aisle or cosmetics.

I’m sure I’ll mention this market more, as I plan to shop there as often as I can.

The original K&S Market is off Nolensville Pike somewhere, and the one I go to is, when you’re driving away from downtown on Charlotte past White Bridge Road, up a ramp on your left. If the lanes merge into one, you’ve gone too far.

Another Closing Down Sale

Filed under: Everyday — Ms. Tabitha @ 6:55 pm

Everything must go I suppose… which is unfortunate. Berry Hill needs to do something to up the shopping traffic. Eden, a gift and garden store, has been a lovely little place to find unique garden items like planters, statuettes, ornaments and even gardening supplies. This Saturday is the last day of their sale so head over and see what you’ll find. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, plus this should get you in the mood to start planting for Spring!

Spice up your life

Filed under: Hillsboro Village,Just plain haute — Ms. Tabitha @ 9:35 am

Posh (get it? Posh? Spice? eh) boutique in Hillsboro Village and Clarksville (and soon in Green Hills) is the one boutique a girl can get away with going into with her significant other. Until someone proves otherwise, I’ll stand by the fact that Posh is the only place in Nashville where you can find fashion for both women AND men at prices that aren’t outrageous by any means, unlike other boutiques that offer men’s clothing.

Penguin, Puma, GStar, Rock & Republic (although denim is pretty standard across the board price-wise), Susana Monaco, Diesel, MAXStudio – there’s variety and rarely will you leave empty handed. It’s also clothes that are current in style but not crazy-trendy so your money isn’t going to be wasted on clothes that are obviously from a particular season in a particular year.

Hey I’m all for trends (if it looks good) but there’s something to be said for longevity in style! But I digress…

Right now, with the weather warming up and Spring lines becoming available, Posh is having a massive sale with mark-downs on almost everything, even warm-weather-friendly clothes.

What’s fabulous is the space next door devoted entirely to shoes. Now there’s a shop owner who understands that shoe shopping is not to be distracted from clothes shopping and vice versa. Especially when one carries shoes in all shades of the rainbow, in almost every style imagineable!

When you stop into the Posh shoe shop, stop and listen to some new music at the Little Shop of Noise. It’s a music bar set up to feature non-commercial, indie artists from different genres, with a different artist each month. Now, I’m not endorsing the music they’re featuring, even though some of the artists I happened to notice are in my personal music library. But it’s just brilliant that a shop like Posh, which has proven its strength in providing Nashville with style, is now moving on to influencing other lifestyle tastes.

Oh! And ask for Hayden when you’re there – girl’s got fabulous taste and a great eye for what will and will not fit you.

The Dotted Line

Filed under: Everyday,Green Hills — Ms. Tabitha @ 4:23 pm

The stationery hunting and gathering continues here at the offices of Life á la mode. The latest addition is a personalized set of notecards with my name in calligraphic font. The treasure trove? The Dotted Line: Paperie and Sweat Treats
card1.jpg

The cards come blank, and you can have whatever you like custom printed for an additional (and small) fee. I must have spent a good half hour in there trying to figure out what to get. Did I want the fleur de lis embossed notepad? Or the set-of-3, gold on red, pineapple print hat boxes? Ooh maybe a huge bag of candy or a cupcake… wait, no, make that the letterpress notecards?

Now, if I had a bigger budget, I would have bought everything I wanted. Alas, frugality was a must and I still managed to make a more-than-satisfactory purchase without breaking the bank.

The Dotted Line sells standard paperie fare of paper, envelopes, thank you cards, customizable invitations and personal stationery without the typical brands you can find at, say, Borders (you know the ones… Vera Wang.. Crane.. zzzzzzz). Did I already mention the candy and cupcakes? They have sweets! How absolutely brilliant! It’s a party host’s dream from start to finish – invites, thank you cards, party favors. The attention to detail with their merchandise is breathtaking – everything is so inviting, all put together so it’s easy for the customer to gather items for the perfect correspondence set or gift basket. Need a gift for a girlfriend’s birthday? Or a last minute Valentine’s Day gift for tonight? At risk of sounding like a car salesman, I promise you – you’ll find it there.

It’s an inviting little store, nothing stuffy or intimidating about it. Picking stationery can be a daunting task, especially for a bride-to-be and I wish this The Dotted Line was there when I was getting married last year. But hey, it’s never too late – this is my new stationery go-to shop.

The website’s not up yet but as soon as it is, I’ll have it linked. In the meantime, just please head over there and treat yourself to the prettiness that is The Dotted Line! And don’t forget to tell them who sent you!

Habit

Filed under: Denim,Green Hills — Ms. Tabitha @ 3:16 pm

Tucked in the quaintest, coolest nook in the Bandywood Shops is a little boutique, Habit.

Owned by Shawn & Meg Blackney, Habit’s decor alone is drool-worthy. Just based on the brilliant use of space and the furniture (a wonderful mix of West Elm zen and rustic country pieces) they use, it’s clear that The Blackney’s have great taste in design. The natural lighting from the large, pane window and the almost all-white interior makes the clothes really stand out. The moment you walk through the door, you’re enveloped in fashion heaven – there’s so much to choose from!

Obviously, the couple knows exactly where it’s at (or at least needs to be) when it comes to what’s hot right now. On one of their mannequins sits an outfit that was, just yesterday, featured in Shopbop dot com’s latest “Lookbook.”

lb_01_30_07_med_7.jpg

The top is by Charlotte Ronson from her Spring ’07 line, and I was pleasantly, but not overly, surprised that they had it already sitting out. Can we say “ahead of the game?” I believe we can.

Other designers available include C&C California, pretty under-things from Eberjey, Hudson jeans, loveliness from Lauren Moffatt, Development, Wenlan Chia, Susana Monaco … just to name a few! And there’s plenty more plus their prices certainly are not outrageous! OOH! And, and: Habit is having a massive sale right now (Paper Denim for $50? Mother may I!) to make way for new lines for the new year. I can’t wait to see what else they bring in!

Count on their good eye for style and know that the clothes they carry are not freakishly trendy and anything you buy now will last a long time.

Habit is at 2209 Bandywood Drive in Green Hills or online at Habit Boutique dot com!
