The Fast Track to Adulthood

Filed under: Bébé — Ms. Tabitha @ 9:09 pm

A good couple-friend of The Husband and I just turned 30 as well. And early this week they gave us all their official “We’re having a baby” announcement. The wee one will grace us with its presence around Christmas (I cannot think of a more wonderful gift for this wonderful couple) and I can’t wait! They’re going to be the coolest parents – they’re both so nurturing and patient, this baby is going to be so loved. Plus they’re also very very creative people. Out of all my friends, I must say their house is the best decorated one and I know the baby’s room is going to be wicked cool.

Now that a close friend of mine is having a baby, I’m upping my own ante when it comes to knitting projects, and I’m already planning on showering this kid with toys, clothes and fun stuff. And if I can’t afford to splurge, well, I’ll just leave it to my friends! There are some really cool baby stores in town.

PoPo in the Hills Center. I don’t know the origin of the name but I know that’s what I’d be if I shopped there. Very cool, contemporary style accessories for the modern child.
Especially Baby/Children’s Shop/A Child’s Place or something like that. I think it used to be called Plaid Rabbit? Anyway, they are in the Bandywood plaza where the Parent Teacher store is, and their selection is about as varied as the many names it has – it’s a massive place with tons of clothing for babies, infants, toddlers… and it’s not just the preppy gingham or seersucker either, they also have some “wilder” options for the non-conventional Southern parent. I.e. if you don’t want your child to aspire to attend Steeplechase every year, you can still shop there too.

A shop that I’m not sure still exists is Gingham in Spaces on Hwy 100. Feel free to clarify that for me if you know.

Unfortunately, none of these places give you the option of shopping online, which is a shame. For those of you who enjoy distractions at work, or like to do your shopping while snuggled on the couch, here are some fun online companies that offer baby and children’s goods too.

fawn&forest – mainly a kids product site, they sell everything from clothes to cribs to mobiles and wall decals. I’m pretty certain that if decorating a child’s room was left to me, I’d hit this place up! First thing I’d love to buy is this lavender/lentil stuffed creature called a Speesees friend. I’m a sucker for squishy, fuzzy, floppy toys!

It’s moldable into different shapes too. How fun is that?! Here’s a crib I absolutely love -

huge.jpg

The thicker side folds down to be used as a changing table and there’s storage at the bottom. How neat! Literally!

Via Domino Magazine this month, Nonchalant Mom also has some cute cute stuff for kids.

It’s amazing how much there out there for new parents now. Gone are the days pregnant women are forced to wear nothing but mu mu’s, and cribs and baby accessories were boring. There are hemp diapers, organic methods of preparing baby food, organic clothes… sometimes I think kids have it better than us adults do! I dare you to walk into a baby Gap and not wish they made those clothes in your size! Just try.

I’ll have more baby stuff as time goes by. It’s so exciting, knowing that there’s an addition to our circle. I can’t wait to spoil it!

Your aura is purple!

Filed under: Just plain haute — Ms. Tabitha @ 9:37 pm

Burberry’s about to open their glorious doors to us here in Nashvegas. But huzzah to the wonders of online shopping and peeks into trunk shows! Look at what I’m in love with! My feet want them!

Purple is such a hot color – not too out-there, and not too subdued either. There’s more to behold so check out Burberry’s Fall 2008 Shoe Trunk Show here!

Grown up Graffiti

I’m picky about wall art. Prints are ok, but I can’t bring myself to put one up on display in my front entrance. When people walk through the door, the first thing they see is an angled wall by the stairs. This wall sits at a tight angle that’s almost 45 degrees from the stairs, and it makes it hard to find a console table that would fit and not look “bulky.”

My initial solution was to put up little wall shelves, or find a small pedestal for a tall vase, and for the taller area of wall, I tried to find something to hang to fill up the space. And I’ve found my solution.

SO pretty. I found ferm LIVING via Design*Sponge (the one place I know I can go to for great ideas) and I am hooked. I’ve already made a wishlist of what I want for the house! My favorite? The World Map - apropos for The Husband and I!

A Case of the Mondays

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ms. Tabitha @ 10:56 pm

I work in the Brentwood/Maryland Farms area and almost every morning, will stop by Starbucks for an iced Venti coffee. Unsweetened. I try to get out of my car to go inside, especially if the drive-thru line is hella long and it typically is.

My first week of work, I remember almost driving headlong into a car. The entrance and exit to the parking lot for that strip mall is two lanes on each side. The lanes that exit onto the main strip has a lane going left and one going right. The day that accident almost happened, it was a silver Honda.

I’ve witnessed it happening a couple more times since then, and every time I turn out of the Starbucks lot, I brace myself for another moron turning into oncoming traffic.

Thank goodness I had my wits about me this morning because sure enough, a silver Honda turned left into my lane. I honked my horn until she saw me, by which point I’d swerved into the right turn lane. She had her window open and stopped as she drove by me. I saw her mouth something so I opened my window.
“Excuse me!” said a very Southern sounding woman with crazy curly hair who looked to be in her 50′s.

I waved her on. She was, after all, in my lane and I needed to go left.
“I said excuse me!”

“Yes??”

“There was no need to honk at me.”

“YOU’RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!”

“I am??? Oh my!”

And then my head exploded.

It Ain’t Easy Being Rich

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ms. Tabitha @ 10:22 am

Article in the NY Times today about the rich feeling the pinch of the ever-slumping economy.

At first I thought by “less rich” in the title, that maybe it’s about people who aren’t impoverished but also not billionaires so I read it. Turns out, it’s about how the filthy, filthy rich are having breakdowns about being less rich. One quote by a Justin Sullivan, managing director of a private jet rental company about a client of his made me go “oh bite me.” -

“A year ago, he would have only flown Gulfstreams,” Mr. Sullivan said. “Now it’s moving to the point where he’s flying Beech jets and Learjets.”

It’s so hard to feel sympathy for these people. They need to try flying Southwest for once. Or any domestic airline, really. But our world is a realm THEY would never be able to identify with either. There’s no such thing as shopping at Target – their equivalent of Target is the Neiman Marcus sale rack.

The article also talks about people gaining weight because they can’t afford $600 personal trainers anymore. Hi, there are plenty of people who pay $30 a month to a gym who are in terrific shape. Evidently not being worth 9 figures means they’ve lost the will to function??? That’s so unfortunate.

Oh! And the men who are so worried about their wives leaving them because their net worth has dropped in value? They should be kicking those money-hungry women to the curb anyway! But that might be just me.

Y’know, I admit that there hasn’t been a day that’s gone by when I haven’t thought “God I’d kill to have unlimited wealth.” But I’d like to think that if that wealth ever comes, even an iota of it, that I’d still be able to think for myself and not fall into that trap. And if anyone is willing to do some sort of study on how I’d do in that situation, you can make that check out to “cash.”

A master is laid to rest

Filed under: Fashion Forward — Ms. Tabitha @ 8:19 am

A pair of pants, a sweater and a raincoat… those are what Yves Saint Laurent used to say was all a woman needed to be fashionable.

The man who was pretty much an artist passed away yesterday, leaving behind a legacy of vibrance, foresight and style. The fashion world has lost a wonderful icon.

Today, designer Stefano Pilati continues that legacy with his own twists on classic looks and couture.

The NY Times has a nice full-page tribute to him today in the paper edition. Here is the online article.
