Probe thermometer? Check. 5 gallon bucket? Check. Salt, sugar, sage, rosemary, onion, spices? Check, check, uh… check and check.
I’ve been given the go-ahead to make the turkey this Christmas. From scratch. Luckily that’s all I’ve been entrusted because if I had to do sides too I think I’d break. Which would suck because I think it’s hard to blog in a straight jacket.
I also have a turkey, and it’s sitting in my fridge thawing. At least, that’s its intention – it’s been in there since Saturday afternoon and at this moment, it’d take a buzzsaw to cut through it and I need it ready for brining by tomorrow night. Readers, if you think I’m better off trying to get a fresh, unfrozen turkey at this point, now is your time to advise.
The recipe I’m using comes highly recommended by a chef friend of mine. It’s from Alton Brown’s Good Eats show on Food Network and while time consuming and rather high-maintenance, the 2100-something positive reviews are enough to encourage me to do it. The prep part is where the high-maintenance comes in. Cooking time is a mere 2 1/2 hours which from what I understand is NOTHING in turkey cooking time.
I’ll let you all know how it goes and what the verdict is and if I’ve ruined Christmas for my in-laws.
In the meantime, if I don’t blog till then, have a merry merry Christmas everyone! Also, Happy Chanukah to all my Jewish friends and readers.
Dooce made some wonderful recommendations for gifts for the men out there who don’t know what to get their girls or significant others. Post is here.

There should be a company that allows you to test TV’s. For, y’know, a couple of days to see if you really like the set or not because it’s a huge investment!

I broke up with my hairdresser. After almost 7 years of going to him, I had to cut the cord. Why? Well, through no 100% fault of his own, he can’t cut hair anymore. He’s always done a stellar job too, but the other day? It looked like I just bent over and snipped away without looking in a mirror. It looked great from the front but in the back? Yikes.
A girlfriend of mine who always has great hair recommended Green Pea salon. Her girl, however, is booked solid till the first of the new year. I needed someone stat. The first available girl was Erika so I took a chance, and I’m quite glad I did. She listened, she checked out the situation and she was careful to not just go for it but instead checked whether I liked the first round of corrections and when I gave her carte blanche, the end result was just what I needed.
What used to be … lordy I forget the name of that boutique that used to be there help me out here. It’s on the corner of Paris Ave and 12th Ave South. They used to have these hideous plants outside of it… ANYWAY! Green Pea Salon looks nothing on the outside like the boutique that used to be there. They repainted it a soft color, and it is as pleasant as it looks.

Full of West Elm furnishings (and you know how much of a West Elm sucker I am) they mix the retro feel of the old garage it sits in with modern decor. I also love that they kept the retro seafoam green tiles in the bathroom.
My husband also goes there, as does my girlfriend’s husband and a couple of their friends so it’s definitely a great salon for men too. Price wise? Erika charges $30 for guys and $45 for women for a cut and to me that’s not bad at all. She also does hairdo’s for special occasions.

Fashion designers showcase their inaugural event dress ideas for the First Lady Elect. Some of them also show dress ideas for the girls.
My picks out of the 40 are #15 by Oscar de la Renta, #24 Kai Milla (it promises to be a gorgeous gown), the Diane von Furstenberg ensemble #31. Possibly even #4 by Badgley Mischka. Given Mrs. Obama’s body type, I’m not sure how some of these would fit. But isn’t that the beauty of custom gowns? They would be made to fit her perfectly.
Personally the Reem Acra gowns are rather, well, bridal. Betsy Johnson’s is plain hilarious, and I adore the Christian Lacroix ones (#33 & #34). I also really like #8 by DVF. Why and how did Whitney land that “job” with her?!?!? She didn’t even know how to pronounce Givenchy! Oh wait, it’s not a real job. And this post isn’t about her or how bitter I am that she gets to be in the same room as Diane.
Which ones do you like?

The government of Italy should be donating a giant wheel of parmigiano to me. Of all the cheeses in the world, that is my absolute favorite. SO yummy.

Egads! It’s a bloomin’ pot of tea! My mother actually just bestowed a gift of flower tea and a teapot on me during her last visit because I complained that she keeps giving those as gift to other people here in the US who a) don’t entertain much and b) don’t typically serve tea. I said to her, “I, on the other hand, do both.”
She got the hint and I can’t wait to show it off during my next get-together.
While browsing on I Heart Luxe’s gift guide, I found this site that sells a whole set. I doubt what my mother got me cost US$45 though, but this I think that’s not a bad price if, say, you had to buy a hostess gift or something.
