Everything Has Its Place

I grew up this weekend.  Ok fine, I made a conscious decision to grow up when I visited M in Atlanta.  Her house is neat, decorated, well organized – everything has its place. Just like her parents’ beach house in Sandestin, every room looks like it just leapt off a page in a home decor magazine.  Her home was welcoming and grown up and I like it.

After a mind-numbing day of moving offices, I came home and stared at my messy home, took a deep breath, and just did stuff.  First I moved things around. Then I grabbed a broom and swept.  Then I started focusing on the kitchen where  I rolled up a grody old rug that we’ve wanted to get rid of for a while now and put the new rug I bought from Urban Outfitters in its place. After mopping and cleaning the area of course.

I tackled the pile of laundry that’s taken over our dining table and made a small dent.  I dusted, I vacuumed, I windexed, I feel a little better.

Before I go spend money on new decor, on furniture and accessories, I need to go find that place for that thing.  Purge, reorganize, put things away and really create that blank canvas I need. And naturally, I have all these lofty ideas:

- Paint the kitchen to add more color to the space. We get so much light in here and spend a lot of time in here now that the tv’s fixed… I hate that it’s so drab. You’d think we’re renters.

- New light fixtures in living room and dining room.  We have super tall ceilings and we finally found an honest handyman who knows what he’s doing when it comes to electrical projects and wiring. My goal is to go to Ikea and pick up some fun hanging lights for him to put up.

- Do something with the long hallway wall. I got the idea here. Looks easy and fun and not expensive at all.

- Frame posters. Many moons ago, I bought this and we also have two more huge prints from Hatch Show Print that are oddly sized and need to be custom framed.  Let’s not forget the wonderful art my mother’s artists gave us when we got married. Some of those need to be framed and displayed too.

Realistically, I need to just go buy some plastic tubs and categorize my clothes for the seasons.  I’ll start there, then I’ll move on to the fun stuff when the necessary steps have been taken.  It’ll be an ongoing project, but maybe (just maybe) it’s what I need so I am mentally in the right place as well.

The Sun Came Out!!

We spent the morning waiting patiently (albeit a little crankily) for some brunch at Another Broken Egg yesterday morning.

It. Was. Worth it! And look at how cute their sconces are – it’s got a little broken egg at the bottom! The restaurant is cute, the food is served in skillets, it was a quaint delicious experience. And, really, the hour-long wait really wasn’t that long, it just felt long because it was still pouring down rain. As we were getting served our eggs benedict specialties, we started noticing the ground drying up and there was light fighting its way through the clouds.  By the time we were done eating, there it was – sunshine.

Hauled ass back home, put on our bathing suits and hit the beach. Oooooohhhhhh heavenly sand and warmth and sun!! How I’ve yearned for you!

I spent most of the hour we had on the beach chatting with G and wiggling and burying my toes in the beautiful, white Destin sand. Headed back to the pool to rinse off and back home to rest for a bit. It didn’t rain at all for the rest of the night which gave us a chance to head over to a little village that’s part of the Sandestin resort for dinner.  We picked the New Orleans Creole Cookery. The girls ordered po’ boys, I ordered the crawfish etoufee, and we all had heartburn and stomach pains for dessert. My leftovers are in the fridge, but I don’t know if I can handle it today. This vacation has been gastronomical, to say the least (what else were we going to do, play board games?) and in spite of the gutteral pains, we’ve been so happy with the food.

Last night, the storm kicked into gear around 4a.m. and the thunder shook the walls.  It was still raining when I got up this morning so out of sheer defiance, I put my bikini on.  L and M have gone out to get groceries so we can cook and eat in tonight.  L’s a great cook, and I can’t wait to devour her barbecued shrimp.

Looks like the sun’s showing some signs of life right now so I think that’s my cue to jump off the laptop.  Happy Memorial day everyone!

Life’s a Beach

And then it rains.

Hello from wet, cloudy Destin, Florida! Rain be damned, it’s still great to be near water and on vacation. I’m on a girls’ weekend with some old friends and it’s been extremely cathartic bonding and catching up and talking.  I managed to stay awake on the 5-ish hour ride here (which, if you ask The Husband, is quite the feat for me) and be a participating passenger.

I’m with three friends, M and G two of whom I have known since 2000 and the third, L, I met that year but didn’t have the joy of knowing too well till recently.  I may not share the level of friendship the three of them have had since their high school days but I am lucky to be a part of it all right now.  This female bonding is something I’ve craved for a while now and I love that I get to have a whole weekend with them!

Today was also L’s birthday, the second of the four of us to turn 31.  To celebrate, we went to a local restaurant here, Cuvee Beach Bistro and Wine Cellar.  Taking advantage of where we are geographically, I ordered a seafood pasta dish, L had the shrimp & lobster bisque, and M & G ordered shrimp and stone ground grits.  For dessert, we shared a decadent chocholate cake and some chocolate mousse. Let us not leave out the Godiva chocolate liqeur dessert drink that L ordered – it looked wonderfully sinful.

M’s parents are letting us stay in their gorgeous home for the weekend. Not since Singapore and my parents’ home have I been in an abode that’s more inviting and beautiful – I could get used to this. Each room is straight out of the pages of, oh I don’t know… Domino or MS Living or Architectural Digest. And no wonder, M’s mother is an interior decorator who clearly hasn’t lost her touch.

We’re hoping the weather lets up even for a couple of hours so we can traipse around in our bathing suits and get some color on our pastey butts.  So keep your fingers crossed for us!!

WIth that… it’s time I tuck myself into the giant bed that awaits. I miss The Husband… but I will admit, this is quite the life.

Jimmy Charles at the Station Inn

No, it’s not a performer you’ve never heard of it’s a new lunch spot that serves BBQ that sounds mighty delicious!!

Here’s the email I got today:

Hello friends and fellow lunch enthusiasts!
There’s a new lunch spot opening Tuesday, May 5th at The World Famous Station Inn in the gulch.  It’s called Jimmy Carl’s and the name has a good story.  Ask us about it when it’s real busy.  It’s run by a couple of great fellas named Rusty and Pat.  Rusty used to live in LA.  He won on a game show and moved to Nashville to start a BBQ joint with me, Pat.  Come on down and check us out Mondays through Fridays from 11am until 11:15am.  HA! Until 3pm.  We will be offering pulled pork, shhhicken thighs, ribs, baked beans once described as ‘the shit’ by a guy with a tattoo on his eyelid, a Chicago style hot beef sandwich (we’re versatile), hot slaw for you people who like a little kick, a macaroni salad that i can eat my weight in, and a sweet bbq sauce once described as ‘off the chain’ by a guy later seen spray painting a dumpster.  We will also be seasonally visiting the farmer’s market to get the best tomatoes, corn, peaches and whatever else looks good.  Our menu will change, our flavors may wander, there may be a little stand-up comedy, the music will be multi-genred and high quality (not in person), and it all takes place in the Mother Church of Bluegrass.  Pinch me.
If you have made it this far I thank you.  Please feel free to pass this along to anyone you know who likes great BBQ and a good time.  Rusty and I hope to see you all soon. Thanks
Sounds good to me!!
