Thanks.

Today’s my favorite day of the year.  More than my birthday or even Christmas.  Thanksgiving has always been an enjoyable holiday that signifies time with people I love, lots of laughter, and reminders of things for which I should be grateful.  My in-laws and the families we spend Thanksgiving with have been through a lot together, both good and bad.  For them to welcome me with such open arms from day one, well, I couldn’t ask for more.  It’s why Nashville has so easily become such a home for me – I was loved from the moment I moved here.

My contribution to this Thanksgiving feast is small, usually one dish (it used to be deviled eggs) and I like to bake so dessert is a natural choice.  This year I attempted The Smitten Kitchen’s Cranberry, Caramel and Almond tart.

It started easily enough – my game plan was to make her Unshrinkable Tart Shell.

It shrank.  I think it’s because I didn’t chill the dough before rolling it out and used the alternate method.  Never again.  How do I know this is why? The last time I made this shell following the exact instructions, it didn’t shrink.

Then I made the filling.  First batch of caramel was burned. I obviously don’t know my stove very well and whatever I thought was “medium low heat” was still too hot and instead of going through the stages of “straw colored – gold – nutty brown” it went from white to “I think this is straw” to “holy crap it’s molasses.”

I added the cranberries and almonds.  Again, it didn’t look like her pictures where you could still see the caramel and it didn’t look overly nutty.  Oh, I have to mention that by this point it was 10:30pm the night before Thanksgiving and I wasn’t about to go run out for more sugar/heavy cream/frozen cranberries.  So I looked at her pictures, looked at what I had in front of me, muttered an expletive and shoved it in the oven.

25-30 minutes later:

Now, it’s not as pretty as The Smitten’s tarts, but it still looks pretty good for a first attempt.  And, since only 2 pieces were left after dinner today, I think it definitely tasted much better than it looks.

The family came and went in a whirlwind long weekend.  It was so much fun, I think everyone had a blast and my dad even complimented how we have decorated the living room!  All-in-all, a success.

The Flor has held up really well.  I sicced my Dyson on it last night and it stayed put so hurray for sensible, good choices.  Our new floor still looks awesome.

Before my parents arrived, I took some family portraits for a good friend of mine.  Here’s a sneak peek.

It was SUCH a gorgeous day!

Lessons in home ownership

Filed under: About damn time,Home — Ms. Tabitha @ 9:41 am

In the past month, The Husband and I have been scrambling to get the house in shape for my parents’ visit this weekend.   Have I mentioned that my parents and sister are in the design business?  Specifically, INTERIOR design and architecture?

The pressure is on.

You remember my kitchen.  I’m still really proud of it.  But since that project, nothing’s really been done.  I’m even participating in the Apartment Therapy Green Cure and Kitchen Cure project but that’s gone by the wayside.  Why? Life happens.  Between a full-time job and part-time commitments, it’s hard to come home at the end of the day (like, 8p.m. end of day) and want to clean or put laundry away.  It’s embarrassing, but our dining table is now a receptacle for freshly washed (and, now, wrinkled) laundry.

Anyway, in the past month we have:

  • Fixed the plumbing in all three toilets
  • Fix the compressor in our fridge
  • Replaced light bulbs in our crazy tall ceilings (had to call a handyman for this one)
  • Fixed our heating and cooling (thanks to Lesley, we found a decent, honest HVAC company)
  • Put some falling brick back in place
  • Replaced the carpet in our living room with wood.

What have we learned from all this? Lesson 1:  Do not, under any circumstances, put repairs off when they are first noticed.  The longer you wait, the worse it gets, the more you pay to fix it.

Home ownership is fun isn’t it?

The other projects still waiting to be started on include getting huge Hatch Show Prints and other prints I’ve purchased in the past couple of years framed.  I want to paint a few more walls, we need a console table or buffet in our dining area, some trees need to be trimmed, the back deck needs work, and we need a rug for the living room.

Do you have any idea how expensive rugs are?!?!!? Thank goodness for Flor.  My order was placed yesterday, I hope to get it soon before one of us scrapes up the new wood.   Lesson 2:  don’t be cheap.  Especially when it comes to furniture or objects you use a lot.  In the long run, something you invest in can last you a lot longer and save you more money than if you buy something cheap that you have to replace every other year.  That adds up.

You might be wondering what I meant by “falling brick.”  Well, it turns out, our house, built in the early 90′s, was built rather… half-assed.  For lack of a classier term.  Corners were cut, and instead of cementing brick into the exterior wall above our back door and supporting it, the builders put a wood frame that sits about an inch and a half off of the surface of the wall, thinking that, hey, if it starts to crumble, this should hold it up.  The brick did fall.  The entire row cracked off and was teetering and while the wood did hold it back, it was one huge vibration from falling to the ground and ripping our gutters out.

Lesson 3: hire a good inspector.  Ours didn’t notice that the HVAC parts were supposed to be replaced a year before we moved in, that we did have termites, and that the masonry was bad.

Thankfully, till my parents’ arrival, I just have clean up to do.  Put laundry away, rearrange some furniture, and freshen the place up.  Once the living room is done I’ll have pictures.  In the meantime, send me good vibes, let’s hope my parents’ visit goes off without a hitch (read: unwanted critiquing) and that we all have a great time.

The Thirty-Something Bride

Filed under: Local Bloggers,Weddings — Ms. Tabitha @ 10:04 am

My life has taken me through wonderful journeys in which I’ve befriended some really awesome people.  During my stint as a yoga instructor, I met people from all walks, some remained acquaintances and students, some became fast friends.

One of those friends is The Thirty-Something Bride – she and I hit it off soon after learning each others’ names.  When she got engaged last year, she came to me and asked if I would help her plan and coordinate her wedding.  “Honored” doesn’t even come close to how I felt when she asked.

On October 11th, I got to witness her say “I do” to her Candyman (that’s her online moniker for him) and be a part of the whole day as their coordinator.

The TSB blogged all through her planning process (you have to see this to believe how great a job she did) and just this week the photographers Jonathon Campbell Photography and Kristen Steele Photography put their pictures up for viewing.

It was a gorgeous day, a beautiful and fun-filled wedding with so many personal touches… I was lucky to be part of it.
