Warm Vs. Cool

Growing up, I was always told foods were either “cooling” or “heaty.”  So when I was on Apartment Therapy whiling the day away I saw an article on Warm and Cool personalities when it comes to home habits and that naturally caught my attention.

The article describes Warm folk as people who “worry about clutter and organizing, and who tend to obsesses (sic) much more about their homes and love The Container Store. They are often personally warm as well, being friendly, generous and extroverted socially. Their demon is excess and attachment to things and people.”

In contrast, Cool people “do not broadcast their issues as much, partially because they are far more private and far more embarrassed about the failures of their home. More highly strung by nature, cool people are seen as sharp and smart, and they tend to delegate their problems to others if they can, because they feel clumsy dealing with the physicality of their own home. They do not feel great attachment to objects, and are good at avoiding clutter. Their demon is excessive thought and over attachment to ideas, while losing touch with people.”

I tried to place me and The Husband, and honestly I feel like I am a bit of both, but about 95% Warm: I love the Container Store (thank God we don’t have one I’d be REALLY broke) and I like the thought of organization. I do obsess about my home, and I am a quasi-hoarder with catalogs and magazines. I can’t bear to throw them out because, well, what if y’know?

I look at this and I go "ooh! How fun!" (Source)

The Husband however leans more Cool – not too inclined to hosting get-togethers too much, when he has an idea he is determined to follow through with it (one of his strengths that I find so sexy), and he’s a killer de-clutterer. He’s all about eliminating the stuff we have but don’t need and he’s all about the “weeding.”

This is also appealing, very ideal but not as realistic for me as it is for The Husband. (Source)

Apartment Therapy recommends that Warm people weed and that Cool people should plant and I agree – I need to be better about letting things go and sometimes I do wish The Husband were more receptive to hanging out with friends we’ve lost touch with a bit more on top of spending time with the ones we see regularly.  That said, I do feel like we make a perfect combination because he reins me in and I force us to be more sociable and it’s a wonderful balance.

Now that I’m more conscious of this I’ll need to harness our strengths and work on our decor more. My goal is to maintain the order in the house so we can have people over on a whim and not frantically throw things into our bedroom if the occasion arises!

This is what I feel is a good compromise of a room - not too many knick knacks, and not too sparse. (Source)

Worth a shot right?

Vote Vote Vote

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ms. Tabitha @ 10:04 pm

I am throwing all pride aside and asking, no, begging you all for votes.  As you know, I’ve been blogging for Ashley’s Bride Guide since December 2009 and I just love it. It’s been such a wonderful part of my day, it’s work I love doing and that I look forward to doing regardless of how tired I am or how much else I have to do and it’s been such a long time since I’ve felt this way about a job.

My dream is to do this full time, to contribute my passion and experience in the wedding industry to help brides and to be a good resource for information. To do so, ABG needs to grow.  With nominations such as this little online award, we’ll reach more brides in other cities and hopefully become recognized as a solid, great resource regionally and eventually nationally/internationally.

So today I ask you to please help us win Best Regional Bridal Blog on The Wedding Channel’s site. Ashley deserves this win – she’s put so much hard work and heart into this site over the past three years, and now she’s including me on this terrific journey and I am eternally grateful.  Winning this could mean so much more for her and, as a result, for me as well so it would mean a ton if you could follow the link and vote for Ashley’s Bride Guide to win Best Regional Bridal Blog.

Thank you!!!!

If It’s In My Backyard

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ms. Tabitha @ 8:52 pm

I used to have a teacher in school who used to say that unless something happened in our own backyard, we’re less likely to pay attention. It was a communications class and we were talking about news.

Well something has happened in my backyard.  Something dreadful, something I never ever imagined would happen in the town I’ve come to call my American home.  After a weekend of torrential rain and heavy flooding, thousands of people in Tennessee are without homes, with a rising death toll currently at 27.  This is happening in my town, and I am disappointed and furious that attention has been focused on an incident that “could have been” vs. getting the news out and sending help and aid to one that has occured.  It took two whole days for national news agencies to even give us a decent headline.

Better late than never I suppose.

Please help – You can text “REDCROSS” (no quotation marks) to 90999 to donate $10 to help those who have lost their homes.  This isn’t just about people whose homes are flooded, people have literally lost their homes – their houses were swept away by floods. Some caught on fire and exploded. People have lost loved ones.

The flood is supposed to subside by tomorrow night but the destruction caused will take a long time from which to recover.  My heart goes out to the people in Bellevue and the areas that were hit the worst.  Send prayers and hope to those who need it most in Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky. To see the latest information and find out how you can help the updates are pouring in on Twitter with the hashtag #nashvilleflood or follow the lovely ladies who run @nashvillest.

Something’s Got To Give

Everyone’s had days like these – suddenly everything you’ve decided to take on just smacks you in the face and knocks the wind out of you and you’re left wondering where the time went and why your skin’s breaking out and why you can’t fit into your clothes anymore.

Martha O’Bryan Center – Providing an Oasis

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ms. Tabitha @ 9:50 am

UPDATE: Please read in comments what my friend Brent (who volunteers with Martha O’Bryan Center) said regarding this post! It’s awesome! Ok carry on.

Recently some friends and I participated in the Martha O’Bryan Center‘s “Miss Martha’s Kitchen Throw Down,” an event to raise funds for the center and to raise awareness of a growing problem in many areas in Nashville – food deserts.

If you’ve never heard the term, just take a minute to think about it and visualize it and you’ll get a good idea.  Food deserts affect mostly lower-income areas of a city, where neighborhoods lack the means to get fresh food.  A lot of times what’s around the corner is a convenience store that offers only canned goods or non-perishable items that, let’s face it, also contribute to poor health and dietary habits.  But it’s not like the community has a choice – that’s what is accessible.

Frenchy

Those of you who follow me on Twitter have seen me tweet about how cupcakes are slowly (finally?) taking a backseat to other tasty delights.  One sweet treat I foresee becoming more popular for special occasions is the macaron or French macaroon.

These macarons are from Paulette Maracons in California.  Her flavors range from Colombian Coffee to passion fruit, with each flavor a distinct color or look.  SO pretty!

Some time this weekend, I’m going to attempt this recipe I found from David Lebovitz.  It seems to be the simplest one I can find, that isn’t all doom and gloom with warnings like a lot of others I’ve seen.  I’ve already attempted this once when I was trapped at home during a tornado watch and because it was quite humid that day and also my first attempt at a pastry that’s not easy to make, they were flops. Major. Flops.

I love to bake.  I’ve had a ton of fun baking cupcakes and 2009 was the year of homemade cupcakes and frosting recipes for me.  This year, I think it’s time to branch out, not just with my baking projects but also my dessert eating habits.  The only place in town you can get macarons are from Provence bakery and I’m not even sure how often they offer them.  Those of you who live in New Orleans or who are going to visit soon, make sure you go to Sucre, another amazing pastry place. I’m tempted to order a box from them!!

I’m looking forward to macarons catching on here in Nashville.  They’d be perfect for wedding or party favors, or just to have on display – they’re gorgeous little things!

NYU Business School Professor Takes Entitled Student Down a Few Notches

Filed under: NOT cool,Uncategorized — Ms. Tabitha @ 12:00 am

If there’s one thing that drives me absolutely nucking futs, it’s people who feel entitled to things that, if they’d just take a few moments to think through, do not make any sense at all.  Like this MBA student (how he got into NYU Business School I’ll never know) who thought it’d be a good idea to walk into a professor’s class one hour after it started and thought it was rude of the professor to tell him to come back to the next class! Since when is it ok to saunter into a class an hour late even if you are “sampling what’s available?”

Yes, business school costs a lot of money.  It’s worth checking out what you’re investing in, but it still doesn’t excuse lecture-hopping.  Or does it?  Am I missing something here? My college education cost a lot of money too but I trusted my own judgement and went to classes I picked based on reviews.  If I could do that at age 19, surely this MBA student could have too.

A quote from the student’s email that made me want to poke my eye out:

Since I had never taken your class, I was unaware of your class policy. I was disappointed that you dismissed me from class considering (1) there is no way I could have been aware of your policy and (2) considering that it was the first day of evening classes and I arrived 1 hour late (not a few minutes), it was more probable that my tardiness was due to my desire to sample different classes rather than sheer complacency.

Part of Professor Galloway’s response:

“In addition, your logic effectively means you cannot be held accountable for any code of conduct before taking a class. For the record, we also have no stated policy against bursting into show tunes in the middle of class, urinating on desks or taking that revolutionary hair removal system for a spin. However, xxxx, there is a baseline level of decorum (i.e., manners) that we expect of grown men and women who the admissions department have deemed tomorrow’s business leaders.”

Now, Deadspin is still checking on the facts to this case and the source of the email.  But true or not, I don’t doubt that people like this exist, and that people like Professor Galloway also exist to put these d-bags in their place.

Enjoy.

Chances

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ms. Tabitha @ 11:26 am

When you have faith in someone, and you give them the chance to prove you right, things can turn out well. The power of faith – it’s a pretty amazing thing.

Last fall, I was given the chance to be the 2nd shooter with Jonathon Campbell Photography for a wedding in Gallatin, TN.  Nashville is chock full of talented photographers, and if I were to get married right now, I’d have a hard time picking but I know I wouldn’t go wrong if I hired JCP.  They’re good at what they do, they’re genuinely wonderful souls and the times I’ve seen them with brides they manage to put everyone at ease to produce the best pictures.  Jonathon’s style is very rich, making the most of saturation without going too far.  His pictures, as he likes to say from time to time, are “delicious” and I agree wholeheartedly.

I’d never been so nervous and so excited all at once like I was that day, and through the adrenalin rushes I managed to take some shots that Jonathon said he loved. Thank. Jeebus.

Once they’re available to show, I’ll have it available. For now, here’s the sneak peek JCP has on their blog on Keri Beth and Jud’s wedding. Enjoy.

From today’s NY Times Motherlode blog: Is Refusing Bed Rest a Crime?

Excerpt:

Burton was in her 25th week of pregnancy in March 2009 when she started showing signs of miscarrying. Her doctor advised her to go on bed rest, possibly for as long as 15 weeks, but she told him that she had two toddlers to care for and a job to keep. She planned on getting a second opinion, but the doctor alerted the state, which then asked the Circuit Court of Leon County to step in.

She was ordered to stay in bed at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and to undergo “any and all medical treatments” her doctor, acting in the interests of the fetus, decided were necessary. Burton asked to switch hospitals and the request was denied by the court, which said “such a change is not in the child’s best interest at this time.” After three days of hospitalization, she had to undergo an emergency C-section and the fetus was found dead.

I’ve never been pregnant and I really can’t say what I’d do, personally.  But I believe in our rights to live our lives within reason.  It’s not like this woman was shooting up (although she was smoking which I think is dumb but not grounds for what happened to her) or getting drunk everyday against doctor’s orders.  And since when do doctor’s orders = the law??

What do you think?
